Sam Johnson joined TCU as a Ph.D. student in Fall 2022. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Edwards University with a B.Sc. in Mathematics with minors in Chemistry and Music, and subsequently took postgraduate courses in Music Theory at the University of North Texas before attending TCU. He writes: “I have always had deep, unrelated interests in STEM, music, and golf. I started as an educator much later by tutoring chemistry and basic math as a senior in high school. Each semester throughout undergrad I was consistently tutoring math or chemistry, singing in choirs at my university and the greater Austin area, and playing piano and singing for the university jazz band. Between my undergraduate degree and coming to TCU, I spent time working as a math tutor over topics ranging from pre-algebra to calculus, as a music instructor for voice, piano, and ukulele, and I worked at a golf course for lots of free golf. Although I would like my foundations to be in pure math, I hope to one day combine my interests and explore concepts of music theory with mathematical rigor.”
