Molly Weinburgh, Ph.D.

Dr. Weinburgh joined the faculty of TCU in 2002. She is the Andrews Chair of Mathematics and Science Education, Piper Professor and Director of the Andrews Institute for Research in Mathematics & Science Education. In 2011 she was named the Chancellor’s Distinguished Achievement as a Creative Teachers and Scholar and an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow. She earned her B.A. in biology/secondary education from Agnes Scott College and her MAT and Ph.D. in educational studies from Emory University. She taught biology for 16 years before accepting her first science education faculty appointment at Georgia State University (1991-2002) in Atlanta, Georgia.

At TCU she directs the Ph.D. in Educational Studies: Science Education, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in science education and the Honors section of a non-majors biology course. She is an active member of numerous science education societies including being Past-President of the Association for Science Teacher Education (2001), Past-President of Southwest Association for Science Teacher Education (2007), and Board of Directors for the Association for Science Teacher Education (1998-2001). Her research interests include equity issues in science education and inquiry-based instruction. Her most recent research has centered on academic language acquisition and conceptual understanding in science by students with limited English proficiency. In addition, she has consulted in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe. She has been awarded more than $12 million provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Funds for Improving Post-Secondary Education, Eisenhower Funds, and Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants. To date, she has $6.2 million in external funding in 14 years at TCU and $6 million during 9 years at GSU.

Dr. Weinburgh is an Associate Editor for Journal of Science Teacher Education and on the editorial review board for the Journal of Research in Science Teaching.
