Areas of Focus
Teaching in the growing field of medical humanities, my research focuses on the ethical treatment of those suffering and facing death. While completing graduate work on narrative and illness at Duke Divinity School, I assisted in the Duke Institute for Care at the End of Life. My doctoral dissertation (Baylor University) titled "Acknowledging the Suffering and Dying: Theological Narrative, Ordinary Language Philosophy, and Isolation" gives a picture of my broad multidisciplinary approach - weaving together philosophy of photography and film, narrative and religious ethics, and cultural criticism to explore the limits of shared presence and isolation illuminated by health crises. Additionally, with more than a decade and a half of experience as a professional portrait photographer, I am invested in the way the arts expand and offer alternatives to classic academic approaches to ethics.
