Erick Raven is a PhD. candidate in the Rhetoric and Composition program. He is a scholar of Afro-Asian rhetoric with a focus on Black and East Asian (Confucian-sphere) rhetorical expressions in popular culture. His dissertation project, Afro-Asian Rhetoric in Women-led Blaxploitation and Japanese Genre films of the 1970s, analyzes Afro-Asian rhetorics, including feminist, multimodal, and cultural expressions, as presented in American and Japanese social contexts through popular films of the era. He aims to bridge gaps between rhetoric and composition, Black and Asian feminist studies, cultural studies, and media studies. He has published articles and book reviews in Journal of Popular Culture, Spectrum, Composition Studies, and a forthcoming article in Black Camera journal.
He is also interested in music composition and performance, particularly blues, jazz, and rock and roll and visual arts, including comic books, traditional pen and ink illustration, and ukiyo-e.
