Emily Durney

Hello! I am Emily Durney, an incoming doctoral student in rhetoric and composition. I completed my BA (2021) and MA (2023) in English at Brigham Young University. At BYU, I worked as a tutor in the writing center and later as a graduate instructor of first-year composition and technical communication. These tutoring and teaching experiences fueled my interest in composition pedagogy, and I focused my thesis on first-generation college students’ help-seeking behaviors with writing tasks. At TCU, I’d like to continue researching underrepresented student populations’ experiences with writing and writing instruction. I’m also interested in writing program administration and questions surrounding generative AI and writing. I love running (audiobooks keep me going), playing tennis, painting, hiking, learning about Hungarian culture and language, and exploring new places in DFW with my husband and one-year-old daughter. I’m happy to be here at TCU!
