My goal as an educator is to empower students to think like a scientist: to trust in their abilities to gather and analyze relevant information, generate logical connections, ask questions, and propose next steps. Science, like life, is often an iterative series of trial-and-error. My instructional framework combines individual preparation, instructor-led active learning and small-group experiential exercises to allow each student to identify an optimal learning environment in which they feel a sense of belonging and are comfortable challenging themselves and learning from mistakes. I believe this framework combining active learning-focused lectures with team-based experiential learning is ideal for promoting the development of individual creative thinking and problem-solving skills, while simultaneously facilitating vital interpersonal skills and resiliency.
