Teaching Philosophy
I have found that the most success in student engagement and outcomes stem from a combination of teaching, discovery, integration, collaboration, and application. The catchphrase that I relate to my non-science majors students each semester is that I want them to be “conscious consumers of science.” This means I want them to develop critical thinking skills as the semester progresses, without having to explicitly label it as such. When I work to make a subject more interesting, approachable, and applicable, the retention of the material also comes more naturally to students. By developing a multidisciplinary approach in the classroom, students enrich and expand their communication skills, which in turn is a valuable skill for future science- and medical-related professionals.
