Hollywood lights are shining bright on TCU once again. Beginning this week, the university will serve as the backdrop for a major television production, bringing the filmmaking industry to campus and to Horned Frog students.
“As I think about our strategic plan, filming on campus directly supports student learning opportunities and our engagement with the Fort Worth community,” said Brad Thompson, executive director of university events. “Building our national exposure while providing students with hands-on experience in their field of study is a win for all of us.”
For students in the Bob Schieffer College of Communication, the filming by Paramount+ is more than just an exciting event — it’s a way to gain experience in their future professions.
“Students will be able to shadow professionals in one of nine departments during one day of shooting, so 36 students in all,” said Tricia Jenkins, assistant provost of undergraduate affairs and professor in the Department of Film, Television and Digital Media in Schieffer College. “While we are able to work with students on producing shorter films or lower-budget television episodes, we obviously are not Paramount +, so this opportunity allows students to see how a major television series is produced, how all units work together, and how long it takes to produce even just one to two minutes of footage for global platforms."
Jenkins, who also serves as chair of the executive board of the Fort Worth Film Commission, recognizes the impact on the city, and said Fort Worth is quickly becoming a sought-after destination for film and television productions with numerous projects choosing the city for its welcoming atmosphere. Unique locations like TCU, Thompson, said, present an opportunity.
“We see this as a chance to showcase our beautiful campus and engage our students in the process,” Thompson said.
For students looking to step in front of the camera, there’s another exciting perk: some students will have the opportunity to work as paid extras. It’s a rare chance to see the filmmaking process up close while earning a little extra cash.
With over 300 cast and crew members working in multiple locations — including the Mary Wright Admission Center, Sadler Hall and the front of Milton Daniel Hall — the production will bring exciting activity to campus.
“The student experience is unmatched, and it creates a positive buzz around campus,” said Thompson, “but our goal is to limit disruptions for our community. We’ll have clear signage and staff directing traffic to ensure everything runs smoothly.”
With cameras rolling and excitement building, TCU is ready for its close-up.
