MalasMarcela Fuentes, assistant professor of creative writing, is making waves with her debut novel and has recently been featured in Texas Monthly and on Good Morning America

Malas takes place in a fictional town in Texas near the Mexico border and chronicles the families of two proud women through the decades.

“‘Malas translates to ‘bad girls,’ so we have these two braided narratives that are going to collide in a kind of trainwreck of destiny,” Fuentes explained to Good Morning America. The national television show featured an interview with her this month when her book was chosen for their book club pick for June.

Texas Monthly wrote about the novel, calling it “the next great Texas literary epic” and said, “Amid a bumper crop of generation-spanning novels from Texas Latinas, Marcela Fuentes’s unflinching Malas stands out.”
