The TCU College of Education’s Center for Public Education has hosted the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee for more than 10 years. This year’s event will be held virtually on Tuesday, March 9. There were 434 schools from eight counties and numerous schools that registered to participate.
“Administrators, teachers, parents and students are introduced to the TCU community by our leadership in this event,” said Karrabi Malin, director of clinical teaching and community partnerships and 2021 spelling bee coordinator. “Not only are we promoting spelling and literacy, we also are promoting continuing education.”
The competition will be held completely online via Zoom. Two youth advocacy and educational studies interns — Reagan Gates and Nico Kraus — are organizing the day’s events and hosting the platform. Zoom participants are limited.
Campus closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic prohibited TCU from hosting the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee in 2020, and the national spelling bee also was canceled. The winners of this year’s regional bee will face an altered format for 2021. The competitors will compete in a virtual preliminary, quarterfinal and semifinal segment before proceeding to the national competition July 8 at Walt Disney World in Florida.
