TCU's Peer2Peer tutoring program received Level I certification for its Tutor Training Program through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). The program currently provides tutoring by 44 highly trained peer tutors in limited courses.
“We’re thrilled that the training program earned this certification,” said Brianne Varela, from the office of Student Success. “Not only does it serve the students being tutored to have highly qualified peers assisting them, but it builds confidence and qualifications that the tutors can carry into all parts of their educational and professional careers.”
The International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) certifies tutor training programs in postsecondary educational institutions. Once granted CRLA certification, the tutor training programs each have the authority to recognize their tutors as having met the approved ITTPC tutor training program requirements. CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring and peer educating at the college/adult level.
The program plans to apply for Level 2 certification in the future.
“We already employ Academic Strategies Tutors who have been trained according to those certification standards,” Varela said. “These tutors focus on metacognitive and psychosocial requirements for tutoring by providing tutoring in areas such as study skills, reading comprehension, stress management, motivation and avoiding procrastination.”
Tutors are recommended by faculty members in addition to being extremely successful in the courses for which they will tutor. Courses are focused on those determined as highest need.
