Registration is open and spots are filling fast for TCU’s Day of Service, which for 2020 will provide both in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities.
“In the past, the day has been all in person and at several different community partner sites. This year we are making a difference, but at a distance,” said Erin Wilson, associate director of community engagement in Student Development Services.
Open to students, faculty and staff, the annual event typically draws more than 600 participants. This year’s Day of Service — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 — has space for about 350 in-person participants at the Dee J. Kelly Alumni & Visitors Center as well as countless “independent” volunteer opportunities. Registration is open through Oct. 26 at TCU Day of Service.
“We encourage people who can’t be there in person to sign up to do an independent option as this option has no limit on number of participants,” Wilson said. “We’d love for every Horned Frog to sign up!”
In-person volunteers will work on one of two projects: making animal toys for the local humane society or painting canvases with messages of hope that will be assembled into a large mural for students at S.S. Dillow Elementary. For in-person participation, masks will be required, social distancing will be enforced and service leaders will be sanitizing all supplies and highly touched surfaces.
The wide variety of independent/virtual service projects includes knitting hats for cancer patients, assembling animal toys, picking up trash, helping map local areas in preparation for natural disasters, making bags for the local food bank, recording audiobooks, transcribing for the Smithsonian Institute and writing letters to the elderly, active duty military and COVID-19 front-line responders.
“We hope that our Fort Worth community neighbors will be reminded that we still support and care for them despite limitations,” Wilson said. “Additionally, our hope is to still give TCU students, faculty and staff the opportunity to use their time and talents to make the world a better place. While we have to be more intentional about finding the right opportunities, there is never a lack of opportunities to serve your community.”
